American Tanning & Leather (AMTAN) is a Georgia, USA alligator tannery. They are holding their first Makers contest. Entries were due Jan 15th so I knocked out this Candy Apple Red ladies clutch Jan 12-14th. My pics that were submitted were altered so they don't look very good, although they weren't that great to begin with. I took some more. It's very similar to the last clutch I posted with a few design and dimension changes. It features a single, 3-piece gusset, lined with Alran Sully, an interior pocket and a magnet catch. Hand stitched with Red Lin Cable and Brown Amy Roke and painted edges.

My latest and last for 2018 is a ladies clutch. It's more of a prototype. There are a few design changes I plan on making for the next one. It's made from Weinheimer Waprolux & Alran Sully. It has Texon stiffener in the front and back panels and in the flap, and an Amiet lock. Hand stitched with Lin Cable.

In Leathercraft Techniques
Hey everyone, I've been hand stitching "American" style with a pony made by my father from Al Stolhman's Hand Sewing Leather book since I started. He also made me a French style clam and I have recently been stitching in it because I can see my pricking marks without moving my head so much. I also like that there are less things for my thread to catch on. Has anyone else made the transition from stitching vertical to the French style? Any tips and any recommendations for a new clam? Thanks, Chris

In Say Hello Before Posting
Hi, I'm Chris. Thanks to Phil for a new forum for fine leather craft. I've been leather crafting for almost 6 years. I started due to my other hobby archery. I wanted to make leather arm guards. I eventually became more interested in luxury leather goods. Currently trying to clean up my stitching, work on hand skiving and preparing to move from hobby to business.
