Hi Guys & Gals!
i want to try a learn something totally new in my leatherwork, and I want to make leather handles like these from
atelier_subdivise
The big problem for me, would be the forming of the handle core. I have seen that the skilled Japanese and Chinese craftsmen used different coloured leather, to better shape the leather uniformly. In my research I found, that Hermes artisans, used a wood jig, to form the core. Im guessing that they shape it with skiving knives ect, wet it, and press it in the jig to get the shape better. I wonder that kind of tools they used here. A million passes with a skiving knife? I know Philip made a little pretty handle, for that mini LV Briefcase he did about 3 years ago. Maybe he chimes in on his process :D Anyways, I wanted to know, that tools you would use for this?

So the forum is getting a little dead. I know for me, it has been Covid and sommer vacation. and im slowly starting to get back in to leather again. So had an idea💡 Lets start a accountability tread 👥 So you post a new thread, with a projekt you want to have done, in a certain period of time, and your accountability buddies (other members) will cheer you on, as you post pictures.
And write you, if you haven't met your goal ect. Anybody in? 🤔🤗

So, recently, Im testing some different ways to get effects on leather. Here I made a 1x1cm leather cord, splittet it down to half size, and made a test. Its waaay to pronounced, but it was just a test. I saw this belt on the web, and loved the raised effect was rounded. I don't know for sure, but it has to have a core right? Its not just skived edges like normal raised belt?
And if so, how is the core made. Im thinking of making a U shape grove in a wood block, and hammering down a wet leather strip to round it, but dont know if that the best way Also thought about trying the way, Phillips shapes the handle in "The Making Of A Post Handle Pt 1/2"
maybe a combination So guys, please come with your valuable input 😁

So, im making a small bag for a friend, and making a strap for it, I only have like 1meter (3.2f) hide for it. And it needs to be a little longer. What is the best option? I would think, I just but a 30degree taber on both ends, and sew it together. But is there any other options? Like at some bags online, I found this. It clearly has a seam to the right. but it looks like 90degree?? Seams like a really bad idea?

Hi guys and gals, hope your all staying staying safe!! So, for a long time, I wanted to gift or sell, my customers my own wax. I sell mainly dog collars, and want to sell a small 30g/1oz tin. I don't wonna do, something cheep, with just beeswax and oil. SO though we could maybe share our knowledge. I have been searching a lot online, and a mix of these seems to be the best Bees wax Castor oil Cocoa/Sheabutter Sweet almond oil.
BUT, I really want mink oil in there. I have been using a lot of Saphire Mink oil, and its just to good. The weather protection is unmatched!
Also, I found place on Etsy, that sells perfume oils. And they do Cigar shop & gunpowder ones :D So, have any of you tried something like this?

So I have I hard time on buying stiffeners. Well, since I have a heard time in my head, understanding rating from 1-10 on stiffness. So did my own little test to help my understand.
I have a lot of Luigi Carnevali Microfibra, but never used it. I thought it did not add any stiffness to my projects. But guess it does :) Anyone else using some of this stuff?

So, the im getting closer to making the first thing on my Bucket list. A 25cm Kelly Bag. been doing research on & off the last six months. Think I have the pattern nailed pretty much. But I need your help, and if you have made a Kelly, please enlighten me with your blessed knowledge 😆
This thread could serve as a manual of sorts, for anyone wanting to build one themself. VERSIONS So its seems there are two versions. A floppy one, and a sturdyer one on the right.
Called Retourne and Sellier. The leather used, dictates which
I have zero experience with piping, so I think im going with the Sellier💪 Hardware So hardware will be Nolvo World and WUTA. Both from China, but super well made.
Both companies have super reputation. I bought some test piece from Nolvo, and did som scratch test ect. They really good. Not ABAS or anything, but for a Chinese product, they are good. Pricing about same as WUTA, on the higher end for that marked.
LEATHER I have a whole calf of Novonappa, unfortunately, the customer wants the grain apperience. I could go for Epsom leather, but I think it looks plasticy/cheap. I really like Foulonne, first picture. Im afried it maybe to soft for this?
or could I just add some bonded leather or something? LINING My plan is to cut out the outer pieces, add reinforcements ect, then add lining. im going with some 0.5mm Novonappa I have.
Could also go for pigskin, but customer have the money to pay the the better leather. So when I get more info or ideas, I will improve and build on this thread. So please, if you have any knowledge on this topic, please share!

Since I started leather craft, I wished there was a thread comparison of all the threads. Maybe we could work together to make one? Send them to Phillip, and he can make a master collection?
Anyways, I have been looking for a brand of synthetic thread for my dog collars. I use Lin Cable for all other project. Over the years, I got a lot of different brands to try, but I found all the cream coloured ones and made them battle a little. So the test.
I gotta say, for threads that feels so different, thet look pretty similar. Lin Cable is just for control First.
Nanmei:
And yes, they spelled it "Gream" on the spool. 🤣
First of, color is kinda weird. Its like gray, green, cream.. Wow, maybe that's why its "gream"
Feel. Its stiff, like the wick of a new candle allmost. Feels really plasticy, also its threaded strange. Easy to see on the pictures if you zoom. Looks random.
Other then that pretty similar to Ritza. but not the same feel.
Riza 25:
Really is nice sewing with, super smooth in the hand, maybe its coated with some parafin. It's not as sticky as the Nanmei.
Looks, its breaded, and stichting looks a little chunky. But that's taste I guess :)
MTB:
Only had this some weeks, but this is now my go to thread. Its lose like Lin Cable. Its not wax coated like Nanmei or Ritza. Its not braided, but ropelike as Phillips say.
Its cheap. Why thread from Japan, can be cheaper then Chinese one, I don't get. Maybe packing. you buy 1000m for 20$, and spool is as simple as can be, no fancy lock or stickers.
I believe is made primary for machines stiching. So my 2 cents. Nanmei was really disappointing, bought 6 spools. wish bought a superfine, just to compare- bought it only for all the hype it got recently.
Tiger thread is nice as always. Though reeeealy expensive, and hard to get. I live in Denmark, where its supposed to originate, I get it from eBay. Think is German. Not Danish.

So I just got some MTB thread from districtleathersupply. Its super nice!. I was surprised!. BUT, im use to sewing with linen, or the flat Tiger thread. This really digs in to the finger :O Yeah I know Im a cry baby, but had to put on some painters tape on the finger to avoid bleeding on the thread.
So any ideas fixing this? a pinkie ring? Using a glove?

So after watching Philips box tutorial a few times, I really want to make a small box myself. My plan is to use some thin leather, and therefore, can't use a thick wood (would not be able to stick through)
So searching around, found some other materials. But cant source them anywhere! This looks like bleached greybeard, but craftsman says not. Apparently he found it in his printer😆 This has to be translation error of somekind right?
Build like a Lettuce huh?
This box was made only using this stuff! Credit -----> unbearable_lightness This looks really good, but can´t fint it. Seems it used for shoe soles? (credit go_leathers) So I need your help. Anyone now some alternativ to wood I can use? Something I can stitch through, but with enough rigidity to be a box 💪🏻

So I only use brass on the things I make, but lately, people are wanting things in silver. Right now im mostly doing dog collars, and before I order, I want to get the right thing. Found this on a sewing blog. Super interesting.! I was going to get them in stainless steel, but maybe nickel plated brass is better? Dogs do get in to water ect.

Hey my friends!. So I got myself a new skiver!. And right now, it works great as a paperweight ! Really top notch!, windowed letters and all! As far as skiving leather goes, not that much.
I made a video explaining the problem

So I have all my tools mounted on my tool rack. My pricking irons are on a magnet, with works. But, I have some, that are not magnetic, and need a idea to wall mount them.
The design of them, prevents them from using a standard loop. This was my first idea (yes I know, im a artist when is comes to drawing also) I could maybe use brass pipes, slightly slanted out. Anyways, please share your ideas!

So I was looking at videos on YouTube this weekend, and viewing a video there was this fast clip, of a guy colouring the edges of a handle. ----> And seeing my dad was an artist, I knew that pen! Its a Cubic marker, AND, you can buy them empty, and fill it with your own ink or stain!
You can get them at Amazon or Ebay. og maybe a well sorted hobby shop Link to eBay ---> https://www.ebay.com/itm/Too-Copic-Classic-Original-Empty-Marker-Dual-Tips-4511338002155-BBG/133085646535?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144 Im buying a couple, and feeling them with water stain. Think it will work perfect!

Hi people!, So it's my time to go toe to toe with zippers. So im designing this wallet. This is the second prototype. Nerly there. So I made a wood block, to put inside the wallet, to align the zipper. But, its still looks kinda bad.
So, my new idea, after searching the internet, is to make a block, with a 5mm slit ind the middle, to help me center the zipper.
And here comes my question. Should the block, be 100% same size as the template? or just a little smaller/bigger? Also, is 1.5cm/3/5 inches thickness of the block standard size or? Zipper is a little wonky :D

Hi lady's and gents. So I have been spending most of my day, trying to find the right leather lining for wallets, I have mostly been using Alran goat leather for lining. But now, im ready to try something new. I want something like this. Looks like veg tan, but SOO flawless. I have been looking at this
https://www.rmleathersupply.com/collections/view-all-leather/products/vachetta-luxe-natural-veg-tan-leather-7-8oz-2-8-3-0mm-made-in-france?variant=14014618697837
Having it split to 0.8cm (2.0oz) maybe?
Just so expensive just for lining? in my country, I can't get flawless leather like that. I really need some expertise. Picture from Tomonori Konishi. ginkawaya on insta.

Hey Guys & Gals, so I have been doing alot of different leatherwork. Chèvre Cardholders, wathcstraps, thick belts and padded dog collars.
Think im ready for my first bag! I have decided on a half moon bag, a little like this one here ----> For the leather, im using some chrome tanned italian veal, from A&A, lined with suede. Now for the questions The leather & lining im using is 1.2/1.4mm each. So about 2.4/2.8mm final thickness.
Will this be to thin and flimsy? Guess it fine for the straps, but the front flap, I am worried for it to be to thin.
