Well I finally got this bag together, been sitting in the cupboard waiting for me to sew it all together for way too long. I always have more projects going on than I can get done in a timely fashion.
I'm pretty happy with the result even though I made my fair share of mistakes, most of which arose from my decision to use leather that I already had that was thicker than what Phillip specified in the course. This created a few problems in assembling the bag, especially in stitching it together and tuning it out. The exterior leather is Italian luggage leather I got locally years ago that wasn't really suitable for knife sheaths (I'm a knife maker). Interior is lined with blue Kangaroo skin and black pig skin on the gusset, and the beading is black Kangaroo skin cut in a circle around the skin to allow you to use a single length of finished beading ( same way you cut lace, just wider). I made the square rings for the handle attachment out of some stainless steel rod and I am going to make a zipper tag out of some stainless Damascus.
As always comments both good and bad are welcome and appreciated.
Cheers, Doug
@Doug Incredible Doug, just incredible!
For thick leather, you've done a good job flipping it without issue. You've done well skiving the edges in that case.
So let me get this straight, you've measured the length of the gusset perimeter, then transferred that measurement into a circle cut of kangaroo skin so you can have seamless piping? Genius!
