Recently I made a bag for a many times returning customer and as I had acquired an embossing machine in between her orders I blind embossed my logo on the leather which I had not done previously. She let me know that she loves the bag but doesn't like the logo on
it and suggested I ask customers if they want it or not. I would love to hear opinions on this issue as I have such conflicting emotions
about it.
I believe all artists should sign their work. In the beginning, I simply signed the interior of my handbags and journals (and still do), but now I also brand them in a subtle fashion, as to not distract from the simplicity of the design (often under a flap or on the interior). If you do not brand/sign your work, you leave yourself open to having it stolen and if so, then the only thing of which to prove authenticity, will be your signature/brand. I have actually had clients want me to add a larger brand to their pieces; it was quite an honor actually!
Sign your work with excellence!!!
Since excluding my logo on the bag I have had my first query as to why it is not there and can it be added to the completed product.🙄
In this case I think it distracts from the overall design. Do put your logo on the inside or perhaps an added tag.
Thanks so much for the feedback. It seems I must go with internal only logo. I get the issue about size, the logo is 40mm across, on a large bag it almost disappears but on this particular
one which is 22cm wide I suppose its a different story. I thought of it as a decorative addition as it is not a name but almost looks like a bow. I have another smaller one which says
Flagship - Handcrafted. Think I will be using that internally from now on,
My philosophy is this: the product is of the client, the work is mine. I don't own a hot foil machine (yet), but my approach would be the humbleness: I'm not a brand, therefore I assume from the beginning my client wouldn't pride himself up with a (still) obscure name, unknown to the audience. So no visible logo for the public. But the work is truly mine, therefore my client should be very aware of this everytime he uses the product, so my logo should sit proudly but unobtrusive inside the product - visible only to my client, or if that isn't possible, in a hidden part, away from the public eye.
Discretion is in itself a luxury in today's world, even more so when applied in leathergoods manufacture.
Yes, this is a touchy subject for most! I think a lot of people would struggle not to be offended if told the same thing by a friend.
Can I ask, did your friend see examples of your work containing the logo before asking you to make the bag? I know we shared a few emails about this previously, but I would like to know if she was aware of the logo.
Much like @Fadi says, your logo in a smaller size may suit the bag a little better, but giving a customer the option will at least rule out any such situation again.
On a personal note, I like the logo and would feel it rather odd if the bag didn't come with your stamp of approval somewhere, at least on the inside.
Hello,
We have a saying in Lebanon about situations like these "You can tell her to go bury the sea"...
Would she ask Dior or Channel or even the more ringard brands like Michael Kors to sell them a bag without a logo? Then why would she ask you?
You poured your heart and soul into this bag (or i hope that you did 🤣) and you deserve to leave your signature on your work of art. The only thing I would advise is maybe go for a smaller/less "in your face" logo. But definitely keep it.
I have, in the past, refused commissions because they asked for a "no logo/brand" on the product. I personally never agree to these requests.
