Have tinkered with leatherwork for roughly 6 years now. Entirely self taught. Will create something, and then sell if to a friend, relative or stranger. When I do get special requests, will work the client to create in my own head what they are looking for through speaking with them, and waiting to get the right "feel". From there the danger begins, in that I do not accept any money upfront. Instead, will buy all material on my own dime, send pictures and ask design questions along the way. Then, as the end, will present a finished product. Price is never discussed, until product is handed over. Have never been taken this way. One day I might.
My business model is akin to Bill Cunningham, "if they pay you, they can tell you what to do". I don't set deadlines, it might take me a year to finish. If they don't like it, I'm entirely willing to just hand it over to them, and walk away without payment. This despite spending 25/hours on a piece. My peace of mind is most important. Don't want the stress of someone telling me what to do, especially when money is involved.
