Interesting video from Dior showcasing some of their more intimate bag making secrets here.
I particularly like the technique if stabilising the softer fibres between the scales. I'm pretty sure they will add an underlining layer over the top to seal it all in, but a great way to stabilise without adding too much stiffness.
What do you guys think?
Late to the party and the link is broken, but I"m wondering if this is the same video?

I am also wondering if the leather straps used are also to fill the concave portions of the leather? It seems to me that without some kind of "filling", once turned, you could press the now convex portions of leather inward. If you follow...?
Just visited the Dior site, totally did not know their bags were in that 4k+ CAD range. Thought they were cheaper end of things like Coach. Cool video!
Taking a crack at a gator flap for an upcoming briefcase. The Cartier video gave me the idea to reinforce the area between the tiles on the flesh side. This is 5/8" polyester ribbon from the fabric store applied with contact cement. Took all the stretch out of those channels, just as you would hope, but of course they remain quite flexible. The ribbon was quite pliable so that I could follow some curves, as you'll see at the bottom of the photo. After this, I glued on a split and the lining leather to get up to thickness. In terms of shoring up the channels between tiles, is that overkill? I don't know. This is, for practical purposes, my first gator project. Thoughts welcome.
JE N'ADORE PAS!!!
This is so different from the Hermes videos. The Hermes ones give you the feeling that the whole craftmen are in love with what they do, that they breathe and live leathermaking, that for them it is more than just a way to make money, it is what they were born to do. Even the choice of serene music they have, the way the artisans speak, the calmness of it all, it's a true craftsman dream!
This on the other end is obviously made to give rich people bragging material when they are hanging out with their rich friends: "OMG, did you see how they make they 10K bag I bought my chambermaid for her birthday last week? They are so professional! They even wear white gloves like doctors and use designer screw drivers". - biggest face palm I ever made my head just hit the wall behind me - I don't know, this just gives me an "industrial" feeling to a beautiful craft, and I just plain hate it! Where are the craftsmen? Where are the beautiful sounds of the workshops?

J'adore!!!
(I want a mold like that!!!)
There's actually many more of these on youtube. You can see how they produce several of their designs. Really nice to watch!
It was really great! The wooden mold !!
That was great. Thanks for sharing. I like how the mold comes apart into sections when they need to remove it from the bag; pretty clever.
