It's not so bad if the binding is trimmed after the second row of stitches, but it would be difficult to continue the lining inside the wallet or bag for example without obvious creasing. Your leather choice would need to be very pliable such as chrome tanned lambskin.
I would probably go for a traditional binding in this kind of situation.
