Phil,
I have the L'Indespensable with both a double bevel and a right handed single bevel blade.
I am curious about your thoughts on bevels on cutting blades?
I tend to think that the single bevel is preferred for accuracy, especially when using a ruler or edge. If following a straight edge with a double bevel, there is a chance of being off by depth of the bevel. ...or when following a glued piece for a smooth edge.
....
Then the next level deep. Rocky mountain sells the blade as "right handed" and "left handed" then details them correctly in the description:
Right Hand (single bevel - when cutting the bevel is on left side)
Left Hand (single bevel - when cutting the bevel is on right side)
I admit, I didnt read the description, I just bought the right handed blade. But I am confused by what arrived.
If the right handed blade is in the right hand, the bevel is on the INSIDE or LEFT side of the blade.
So if you use this blade with a ruler...the bevel side is on the edge....leading to the same issue with a double bevel not being able to cut straight down a flat edge. Am I wrong in my thinking? Making sense?
I thought for sure they mistakenly sent the wrong one. But it is how its described in the website AND then demonstration video....the manufacturer of the blade is using a blade with the bevel on the inside in his right hand!
SO, am I confused, wrong, ahead of my time, or should I simply get the left handed blade?
I like your trick of placing a razor on its mark then bringing the ruler to the blade. Good tip.
I also have a double bevel al Stohlman round blade. I would assume he had a great attention for detail...so why double? How about a single bevel round blade? (At least that would be ambidextrous) Thanks!
Hi Spence. To be honest, I see the single bevel craft knife as a solution to a problem that I've personally never encountered.
By the looks of it, the CM blade looks quite thick and would suffer as a double bevel. By contrast, the double bevel knife I use has a 0.4mm thick blade.
The whole right/left blade thing is a marketing nightmare lol. Having tried a single bevel in the past, I couldn't get on with it and gave it away.
