for me, Small Leather Goods and Straps (like the wrapping of piping) require 2 different things. A manual splitter is perfect for straps but it will not work for Small Leather Goods (like to split down a hidden pocket for example).
If you want something that does both, you will need to invest in a Bell Skiving Machine. It will be versatile enough for both (and many other things).
If the budget does not allow, I would suggest the machine below and investing time into learning to skive by hand (for the small leather goods). Even if you do get the Bell Skiver, do invest time in learning to skive by hand, it is an essential skill.
I've gone through several iterations of manual splitter thinking that I'd never need to fork out for a decent heavy one. I was wrong. From cheap Chinese ones to expensive Chinese ones, I've spent enough to have been able to spring for a proper old school British one. In the end, I managed fine with a $150 one from Amazon. Naturally, as soon as I bought one, another became available that had that nice locking bolt on the side. None the less, I manage just fine. Blade needs to be sharpened and holds an edge nicely.
