Hello all, I am new here and after watching a couple of videos I am going through a tool purchasing phase.
After watching the edge painting video, I was pondering how to get perfectly straight edges on joined (glued & stitched) panels prior to edge painting, but without resorting to sanding as a cut edge is recommended.
After a bit of fluffing around and searching on the internet, I found these cool little leather planers, same concept as a wood plane, but smaller by ALOT.
I was thinking I am going to try these out to see if I can plane joined panels to a "Cut" finish that is 100% perfectly flat and level - has anyone seen/heard of/used these before?
Also, they over both straight and curved bottoms, so going around corners and radiuses will be pretty easy too - so if they are the real deal, pretty excited!
Welcome
I have a flat bottom one. It works fine, but you can really only use it on stiff leather.
Thanks for the feedback! - I was really just struggling with how to get the edges around a gusseted bag nicely flat and matching prior to edge paint. I suppose it doesnt' matter so much as the edge paint will hide any minor mismatch, and you only really need perfect match for burnishing which will be hit with the sander anyways.
I ended up ordering a couple as they were only like $6.50 US, so i guess they'll end up as an interesting little curiosity!
Hello Aaron, welcome to the forum!
While nothing beats a cut edge from a sharp blade, you can do a decent job with the little planes.
They aren't good for going round a sharp convex corner though, they can easily remove material inconsistently, so straight or mildly concave projects are ideal.
I think this is the only time I've ever used the curved plane:
