Hey guys, just wanted to get your opinion on this awl blade I purchased from crimson hides.
The blades in the pic are both the same French style blades but in different sizes but the one on the right is angled on the left hand side rather than rounded and symmetrical.
I emailed there support and they said if it is effecting usage of the blade they are happy to send a replacement. However I am a complete newbie and as such don’t know what working “correctly” is and am still waiting on my other tools to arrive so am unable to actually test it.
If it what a cheap tool then I probably would have just let it go but just wanted to get your expert opinions as they were somewhat expensive (at least for me as a beginner).
Thanks in advance!
It looks to be finished by hand, and that hand wasn't feeling particularly skilled that day.
If you don't feel confident re-aligning the tip angle yourself, then I would take CH up on their offer. There is a course in the Masterclass showing you how to sharpen a new awl blade, if you did want to see how it's done.
To be honest, even if you can fix the tip, I'd take them up on the offer.
G'day, so I'm a fellow beginner. I have just started upgrading my tools. I have 2 awls. My favourite one is like this. Generally ya tools don't come sharp. It costs the manufacturer allot of time to get that razor edge we need.
I reckon if you sharpen the blade it will turn into a 'new tool'. (Mine did). The difference between a cheep tool and an expensive one, the materials, how long they hold n edge for(amongst others). It has taken me 12 months to learn how to keep my various tools sharp. It was time worth spent.
