Hi everybody!
I have been wondering what the differences are between using columbus wax, which is seen with a lot of Japanese leather workers and with regular beeswax. I am mainly wondering what the benefit/advantage is for edge finishing with this wax: melting, polishing, etc.
Thank you for any help on this subject!
I was wondering the same thing. I have seen on youtube people just rubbing the colubus wax stick on the edge of a project. It's unclear how much you need to rub as it applies nearly invisibly. I rub each side about 20 times and go over it with a wood slicker and canvas. I see nearly no difference in appearance whether I apply the wax or not.
Yea I have a block! It's definitely hard than regular bees wax. I apply it with a (hot) filetuse so it's easy to apply. I think they added paraffin to it, which would help with the water resistance probably. I'm not sure if it'll stay better in the long term though. I've used it on a prototype wallet which I'm using right now, so we'll see how it hold up. :)
@lowlandsleathercompany I can't say that I have used Columbus wax before, so I wouldn't be able to tell you.
I assume that it is a harder wax that gets a better polish. If you end up buying some then a forum review would be great!
