Hey all - I've been using some Poundo Rubber Board from Tandy Leather when I'm pricking leather and punching holes.
I'm getting a larger work surface soon and would like to find an alternative to Poundo (I get it from Tandy Leather here in the USA - not sure if it has a more official name). Not because it's a bad product, but because it's extremely expensive for the small size that Tandy sells. I'm assuming there are cheaper options on the market that work just as well.
What do you all use underneath your leather when your punching or pricking? Many thanks!
Thank you for the link. I am using my green self healing cutting mats at the moment and they are pretty much getting destroyed.
Good luck!
Hi @marinella ,
It's actually 4mm and edited the post above.
This is what I ended up purchasing - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263572252103?hash=item3d5e2165c7:g:tD8AAMXQBNlRgMYN
Again, took this on advice so hopefully someone else can comment and confirm if this is safe. I tested it last night and seem to be working well.
Thanks,
P
Hi Perry P. Thanks for the tip.
Would you mind letting me know what the plastic is called/made up of, as an initial search brings up both acrylic and perspex sheets which I'm not sure is right.
Thanks.
Hope you don't mind me opening up an older thread but was looking into this myself. I got a tip that might be useful, or better yet, confirmation that this is safe for my new irons!
Have you ever noticed some lorries having panels of clear plastic by the rear doors? They are also used in warehouses etc. You can buy replacement panels off eBay for not much. £16 for a roll and by the look of it, should last well over a year. I ordered a 4mm version as this is the thickets I could find, cut a square and glued it on a piece of soft wood.
Got this idea from Nigel Armitage so can only assume if he uses it, it should be safe.
The Vergez site has Ertalon striking plates for use with pricking irons. They look and read very similar to the hard white polythylene plastic chopping boards from IKEA. Does anyone know if the IKEA boards are a suitable substitute?
@alex.masica I use MDF for pricking. Sometimes I'll use the Acetal sheet for that purpose if I'm feeling lazy. Doesn't pucker like plastics as it's full of air and just compresses.
