Hi all, I was wondering how you guys store your leather. At the moment all my hides are stored in the guest room laying flat on the bed .
However I would like them closer to me in my workspace but since I have limited space, I can't install huge shelves to lay them on.
Any suggestions?
Hey all! thanks again for the advice. Just wanted to show what eventually did.
I store my leather wrapped in kaki brown paper that covers the entire leather hide.
I know of crafters who put humidifier or temperature control thermostats in their storage room for leathers. To prevent mold and fungus from growing.
I have always wondered what the best way is! The pipes are a clever idea. I use simple wooden trestles so they can just unfold and "rest".
Thanks all for your advice. I think i might give the plastic tubes a go. And maybe look for a storage horse or something similar.
I store mine this way.
Honestly, it is not recommended as you can see that the bottom of the leather rolls will be 'crushed'.
But it is a small sacrifice for combating the greater 'evil' which the vile and cursed mold and mildew.
Essentially I use the rods around the walls of the cabinet. So far, it works great and it does really keep leathers from getting the yucky white and green treatment.
This an old photo and I have since updated the cabinet with more rods since the collection is growing.
I made this setup
Basically, I got 15cm round pipes (the plastic ones used for residential sewer evacuation. Make sure you don't buy them used 😂 😂 😂 ), cut them to 1.3m lenght, and stacked them on top of each other. It makes it easy to take a side out whenever I need one.
On the other side, it also forces me to stop buying every single side I see and like and don't need because now I have to think whether I have space for it under my table.
For the stiff leathers, I usually take the side out and lay it flat on the ground overnight.
Yeah basically what Daniel said regarding laying them over a tube similar to what tanneries use:

You could buy a thick walled tube and attach it to a frame.
Thick vegtan hide does best laying flat. An alternative is to store them hanging somehow much like they did for a long time drying in the tannery.

I roll them op over a tube. I have like 6-7 hides. seam to work
