Hello everyone! Who already worked with water buffalo? I heard that the fibre structure is different and stronger than from a cow. Is it true? Does it mean I could use this buffalo calf for small leather goods and have it thin like I would use goat?
I have a sample from Remy Carriat. The product is called Sherpa. For me its a bit strage, it seems that the surface is thin and strong and the rest quite 'fluffy'. Is Remy Carriat a tannery that is producing high quality leather? Unfortunately I cant really judge the sample I have as I dont know that its the buffalo or the tanning that I dont quite like. I am happy about every idea or comment and I know that I havent asked a precise question...
Thank you,
Kilian
Remy Cariat is very very very well known tannery is the luxe world. They supply people such as Hermes, Dior, Vuitton, etc... I have never used or seen any of their leathers, but I would assume that their leather is some of the top quality out there.
@kilian I would start out by saying the samples you get sent are unlikely to have come from premium parts of the hide.
Likely you've been given a piece of neck or flank. Take a look at the hides you already have, if you cut a sample from the extremities, would it give an accurate representation of the hide as a whole?
Sometimes the back is finished very well and it's hard to tell, so that can vary depending on how the leather is processed. But generally the flesh side gets noticeably looser on the edges, especially chrome tanned.
I have worked with buffalo, but only in chrome. Very similar to cow hide except for more texture and it comes in greater thicknesses (thicker grain layer too, for obvious reasons).
I don't remember mine being 'fluffy', but it has been some years.
