Motorcycle Seat Padding?

I spend a good portion of my free time at my friend's shop which specializes in Custom Motorcycles (Cafe Racers, Brats, etc.).

His favorite approach to seat building is a 3 layer approach: Base from a very dense foam (this will provide support and remove the vibrations transmitted from the bike to your back), then a middle layer of mid density foam for comfort and, if the thickness and budget permits, he uses a top layer of Gel padding to provide extra comfort. In this approach, the layers take approx this ratio:

30% dense foam 55% to 60% mid density foam

10% to 15% gel

As a side note, like you mentioned, you will need to shape the foam to form.
