Hello Leathercrafters,
I'm posting this forum thread looking for advice on how to stitch two leather edges together as in the photo attached. To me looks like they used a "butt stitch". But should add a reinforcement behind? Is there another technic I can use to have the same end result?
Kind regards,
Bruno
I like your french seam idea, but i would improve on it. You used a pricking iron for the french seam that joins the 2 pieces of leather. This makes long slots which are visible (and also weaken the stitch). Try to use round dents (not round punches). The point is to have a hole as small as possible so as to not be seen, but also a round dent pierces the leather and then compresses the fibers around the hole which makes a stronger hole and stitch (as opposed to a punch that would just sever fibers all around).
another idea, have you tried Amost french seaming and then buttstitching.
Let me explain, turn your edges and then glue both pieces to a third piece of leather (firm) and wait throughly for the glue to set and bond. (no stitching)
Then buttstitch.
The main issue with buttstitching is that if the pieces are not thick and firm, or if there is nothing forcing them in place, they tend to arc where they join. But gluing them to a third piece, this should remove that, theoratically.
Hey Fadi,
Thanks for participating in this discussion. I thought the same as you and I tried to do a few tests. One with buttstitch, another one gluing a piece of leather behind and another one with what I believe is called french seam. Bellow you can see pictures of my tests. I didn't like the final results of the but stitch and the leather glued behind because if you bend the two sides you have an open gap. The french seam is nice, it is strong, but in my case doesn't look so good, you can see the marks of the stitching in the middle. I would like to know if I can have better results with the french seam, maybe instead of using a pricking iron with slanted holes, I should use one with round holes in the middle.
Kind regards,
Bruno
Hello
Either a butstitch or they saddle stitched both sides to a third pannel hidden inside underneath the liner.
as a funny-ish story, i spent 5mins looking at the picture and the saddle stitch on top and wondering "where the frig does he see a butstitch". and then, I saw the side of the bag!!!
