Hi guys and gals, hope your all staying staying safe!!
So, for a long time, I wanted to gift or sell, my customers my own wax. I sell mainly dog collars, and want to sell a small 30g/1oz tin.
I don't wonna do, something cheep, with just beeswax and oil. SO though we could maybe share our knowledge.
I have been searching a lot online, and a mix of these seems to be the best
Bees wax
Castor oil
Cocoa/Sheabutter
Sweet almond oil. BUT, I really want mink oil in there. I have been using a lot of Saphire Mink oil, and its just to good. The weather protection is unmatched! Also, I found place on Etsy, that sells perfume oils. And they do Cigar shop & gunpowder ones :D
So, have any of you tried something like this?
You are 100% right!, the purpose of this thread, was to explore alternatives. But the for the ratios, its a good start
I want to kinda make my own. But have no expertise here. But from I can gather, a good balm/wax needs 4 things.
Oil. gives volume to the mix. the cheaper part of the blend hard wax - to harden the mixture, making easier to work with, and waterproofing it
Fats: to give fats back to the leather, lost over time. I really like Lanolin, the fat from sheep. The best part of sniffing a sheep skin at a farmers market, having people look at you, like they know your fetish :D
Also Saphire Medaille have it in there balms
Solvent. to clean the leather, help spread it.
Wax: bees wax
For the carrier oil, im thinking coconut oil. it have a 4 year shelf life, at that important to for me, Adding bees wax and A vitamins, will get it up to 5-6 years I think
I really dont know, how much better it will be, adding all sorts of other oils and fats. in small amounts. Maybe simpler is better? or at least good enough
I guess I have to make a small batch, and try it out.
@Daniel Wøhlk Hey Daniel,
Looks like your ingredients are very similar to the world famous 'hipster mixture' that used to be in every other instagram post.
I have a feeling that those ingredients were chosen more from a marketing standpoint than actual leather care, especially around the time it came out.
To make a solid wax that can be wiped on and buffed with a cloth, it doesn't take much oil to soften the beeswax at all. Too much oil and it will turn into a liquid during the summer and spill all over your customer.
