One of my all time favourites is canvas. Natural material, very traditional, very strong, good availability and there are many shining vintage examples still in circulation.
Various thicknesses will give varying degrees of stiffness, and if you aren't flipping the bag, you can brush on fabric stiffener or even dilute PVA to fuse the fibres for a firm handle.
When in doubt, always use Satanic Incantations... There aint nothing better for when you want things to heat up and stiffen.
