Hi,
I am looking to purchase some goat leather for wallet interiors and the leather from Alran seems to be the most popular. I would like to clarify why that is?
1) Is it because of the firmness? I would imagine that is a benefit for interior over a softer tempered leather
2) Are there other tanneries that have a comparable goat leather? I have found multiple other suppliers that carry goat, but they all seem to be soft temper.
I appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Hey,
Alran Sully (used on most of the wallets you see online) is EXTREMLY soft. It is also of a superior quality, you can go down to 0.4mm thickness and still have it as solid as a rock.
I think the reason a lot of people buy Alran is mostly marketing and the fact that it is easily available also, specially in the US with RMLS carrying it. Do not get me wrong, it is a superior product, but there are other goats leather out there that are also as good. It all depends on what is easier for you to get your hands on.
Back to the wallet, I think soft goat is used inside because it gives a very luxurious feel to the wallets. If you want a firm goat, go for the Saffiano (also from Alran), but i do not think I have seen it used inside of a wallet more than a couple of times.
