Hello everyone reading.
I just have a few questions to help my knowledge of my leather work.
1. What is the best stiffener/backing material you would recommend? (And where to get it if possible)
2. How do you judge the length of thread you'll need? Do you measure it or just take a long piece then cut the rest away?
3.When edge creasing;
* How long would you roughly leave the creaser on the flame when doing sections?
Like you do 2 lines and then put it under the creaser again to reheat.
* How the **** do you edge crease a V shape or a corner without ruining leather?
Thanks,
Vin
P.S I'm sorry if it is just common sense to what I'm asking.

Hi Vinnie,
1) That very much depends on what you are making and what kind of physical characteristics you want from the item. Watch strap? Wallet? Bag? All different materials, or at least different thicknesses.
If it's stiff vegetable tanned leather you're using though, you are unlikely to need stiffeners.
2) Experience. You have the the '4x length of seam' rule of thumb, but it depends on the thickness of leather, pricking iron pitch, compressibility of the leather, even how tight you sink a stitch.
In essence, use more than you think you'll need for now, then cut back when you have more practice.
3) Again, there are so many variables here for me to construct an answer so I can give you something useful.
This is another area where practice and experimentation will give you more useful information than me or anybody else on this forum.
Just be sure to take notes, even if you don't reference them again, the brain remembers information better if you write it down.
