Hey Guys & Gals, so I have been doing alot of different leatherwork. Chèvre Cardholders, wathcstraps, thick belts and padded dog collars. Think im ready for my first bag!
I have decided on a half moon bag, a little like this one here ---->
For the leather, im using some chrome tanned italian veal, from A&A, lined with suede.
Now for the questions
The leather & lining im using is 1.2/1.4mm each. So about 2.4/2.8mm final thickness. Will this be to thin and flimsy? Guess it fine for the straps, but the front flap, I am worried for it to be to thin.
One thing that works for me for making the flap is just gluing the two pieces together with white glue. (Fiebings leather cement). That seems to stiffen up the leather just fine. I almost always use 1,2 mm leather.
Thanks for the input!; just what I needed. I have ended up deciding, that its to thin. Its SOO hard finding leather I think! If I want leather, with many colours to chose from, its pretty much always thinner then 2.0mm
I don't mind using chromes tanned. Mistakes will not be so expensive then.
Any other recommendations for leather shops in EU?
Maru Tuchi: Would you mind showing some of your work please? 🙏🏼
@Daniel W. Pretty much what @Maru Tuchi said.
Have you gone to any retailers to have a look at the thickness and construction of similar bags?
It may be worth a reconnaissance mission to check out a few stores for ideas. I highly recommend that.
Hi Daniel!
I've made one like this several years before (when starting in my leatherwork journey), I guess you could add a very thin reinforcement to the main body and use an extra layer of leather (thin but with body enough) for the flap to be consistent but not too rigid. And give the rounded/dome shape when you glue it.
You may want also to skive the edges of front, back and gusset a little bit, not to look so thick. Depending on what you have in mind...
Can't wait to see how it will look when finished!! :)
Good luck mate,
- Maru
