@Anders from Jävlar Yes, you can carefully drive a wedge under the front metal part of the puller until the tab just squeezes through. Then when you have made a new (leather?) puller with a metal ring, you can insert and gently hammer down with a nylon mallet.
Prising the puller open without chipping the paint may need some hard plastic or wood. A flat head screwdriver with tape on the end can be worked of you are very careful.
