Bought my firs 3 small alligator hides ever, and I noticed that the edges of the "scales" could peel off a bit when I fold the hide horizontally (or perpendicularly?). Is this normal? Or did I happen to receive some inferior pieces?
I intended to make some wallets and if they do peel off or stick out, it'd be a problem. Any input or suggested remedies?
@Danny I've only ever seen this on glazed (polished) skins that are generally stiffer. But it is rarely seen, at least for me.

Hello,
This depends on the grade of the skins. Lift on the scales of the TAIL is to be expected on lower grades skins and on some medium grade in big sizes. I have personally never seen or heard Lift on the belly.
Can you show us the lift and what parts of the wallet/projects you are trying to use them for?
While I try to use every square inch of exotic hides "to get my money's worth", I know that most luxury bag makers use very select parts of the hide for their products...with a fair amount of waste.
I have never used alligator, but I have made a couple of things from ostrich leg which have scales too. I just tried to make things taking into consideration that something could potentially get caught on them and damage the item. Could the alligator scales be glued down maybe?
