Hi all,
Just wanted to know what everyone does with their prototypes once they're done with them. I find myself making several versions of the same thing, and then not knowing what to do with the older versions once I've corrected/improved on them. I don't want to keep them because my space is already crowded as it is, but I also don't want to give them away as I don't want to put something that I'm not perfectly proud of out into the world. Throwing them out seems... wasteful, especially for something that once had a life.
What do you all do with your prototypes? Do you keep them? Give them away? Is there somewhere that will take leather scraps for recycling?
Thank you!
Deconstruct and use it as scrap for testing skiving and hot stamping.
@hanabarnes Consider the possibility of giving them to charity.
Knowing that your creation has helped those less fortunate is a nice feeling.
Also, somebody somewhere who may not be able to afford a nice bag is sporting a quality leather hand stitched piece.
Then look up into the sky and smile to yourself :D
I personally give them away.
I usually don't stamp my logo on them so that it doesn't "represent" my brand. But in my opinion, whoever is getting it (usually friend or family) is warned about what is wrong with the product and that it is a prototype. They are not paying for it anyways, so they have no reasons to complain.
I have the same issue. I usually cut it up and use it to practice techniques like skiving, stamping, stitching...even checking the sharpness of my knife.
I dont really throw scrap out until its virtually dust and unusable. However, I always take photos of previous renditions of a project to see how it progressed.
If the prototypes are large enough, I cut them up and reuse the leather for other prototypes or as scraps for testing edge paints, glues or whatever.
