Honestly speaking, this is very subjective. All leather people will love shell cordovan as it surely is the patina god of leathers like Fadi mentioned. But then again a normal customer won't care unless they know their leather, which is rare. Some people want costly shit to stand out. So yeah, there is hype; but I don't think too much as long as the hype sells it well.
Stay away from it for bags and large projects. The patina at scale is too overwhelming.
Is it worth the very high price? That is a subjective question...
I have worked and owned pieces made of shell cordovan. My own wallet is made out of Shell. I personally love shell for 2 reasons: It is the Patina God of all leathers. Nothing patinas as quick or as pretty as Shell. And I love how strong it is (it is extremly extremly dense), and therefore can take quite a lot of beating without breaking a sweat.
Would i buy a wallet made out shell cordovan for a few hundred bucks: sure.
Would i buy a bag made out of shell cordovan for quite a few thousand bucks: no way in hell.
so i would say: Worht the hype, definetly. Worth the price, it all depends on how rich you are.
