I am nearing completion of my “large strop”. I realize more and more - tools are not sharp you might as well give up the craft....
I can’t get mineral spirits here to mix with the “green polishing / stropping compound” (per the building a giant strop video) here in California. It’s illegal here apparently. Home Depot carries it but, not in the Golden State.
What would you choose as the replacement to mix with the green compound to properly build the strop?
Thank you for your input!
Mineral Spirits Substitutes
#1: Acetone. For many years, acetone has been a popular solvent that is often involved in cleaners.
#2: Denatured Alcohol. Denatured alcohol is also a type of solvent cleaner whose function is quite similar to mineral spirits.
#3: Turpentine.
I've used the generic solvent you can put in your wood or metal paint with good results. You can look up for any kind of oil based paint solvent which is a bit different than the generic but works better. Turpentine is better than anything I would say but is more expensive.
@gusjackson3 Ah, California!
Acetone may dry too quickly for an even spread and denatured alcohol may lack the horsepower to dissolve a hard wax in it.
Turps on the other hand may be a good substitute in this case.
If you got these recommendations from the same woodworking website I just checked out, they also mention lighter fluid which might work too.
